Englishman rocketed out of the starting gate and was never seriously threatened on his way to scoring a three-and-three-quarter length victory over Deep Flame in the G1 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial Stakes at Saratoga on Saturday, Aug. 29.
The three-year-old Maxfield colt was scoring his second straight G1 victory, after taking the G1 Woody Stephens at Saratoga on June 6 in similar fashion.
Englishman zipped right to the lead under Jose Ortiz, but was not forced to overdo it early, as he got the opening quarter in :23.01. The race was over at that point. Second choice Deep Flame began to make some inroads nearing the stretch after the half was posted in :45.50, Englishman once again floated wide into the lane while firmly in front and ran up the score from there to win easily.
His final time of 1:20.71 was just 0.17 seconds outside the stakes record of Runhappy and 0.31 back of Artax's track record of 1:20.40.
Bred in Kentucky by Fifth Avenue Bloodstock, Englishman is out of the winning Speightstown mare In It for the Gold, a daughter of G1-placed Stakes winner All Due Respect. He was a $400,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase in 2024.
Englishman is just one of several exciting Stakes winners from Maxfield's first crop. The stallion is also represented by G3 Indiana Oaks winner, Maximum Offer; Mashallah, winner of the Tyson Gilpin Stakes; and undefeated Sabino Canyon, winner of the Petramalo Mile.
