Area proves much the best in Ricks Memorial Stakes at Remington Park

Daughter of Street Sense goes from last-to-first to earn her first Stakes win

Area swung out to be five-wide at the top of the stretch and came charging down the center of the turf course on her way to posting a two-and-three-quarter-length victory in the $75,000 Ricks Memorial Stakes at Remington Park Sept. 29.

It was the first Stakes win for the four-year-old Street Sense filly, who has now hit-the-board in seven of 10 starts.

Area broke sharply and was content to race at the rear of the eight-runner field through the opening half-mile. Piloted by jockey Ricardo Santana Jr., Area began improving her position on the far turn, quickly moving up from last into sixth as the field hit the top of the lane. Santana then tipped Area out five-wide and into the clear and the filly responded, sweeping past the rest of the field as she pulled away for an impressive victory.

Area was bred in Kentucky by Patricia B. Blass and is out of Isabell’s Shoes, a Stakes-winning daughter of King Of Kings. Isabell’s Shoes is out of the Multiple Stakes-winning mare, Pink Shoes, and she is a half-sister to Multiple Stakes winners Prom Shoes and Wildcat Shoes. Others in the immediate family are G1 winners Bolt D’Oro (by Medaglia d’Oro) and Zensational.

In addition to Area, Street Sense is also represented by 2019 Graded Stakes winners McKinzie (G1 Whitney, G2 Alysheba Stakes), Dixie Blossoms (G1 Coolmore Classic), Champagne Anyone (G2 Gulfstream Park Oaks), Air Strike (G2 Triple Bend), Doctor Mounty (G3 Tropical Turf) and Aztec Sense (G3 Fred W. Hooper Stakes).
