The Last Hurrah goes to Anegada in a thriller at Turfway Park

Son of Midshipman earns his second Stakes win of the year

Three Diamonds Farm’s Anegada held off G3 Jeff Ruby Steaks winner Final Gambit by a nose to win the inaugural $125,000 Last Hurrah Stakes at Turfway Park on Saturday, Dec. 27.

The victory in the Last Hurrah marked the second Stakes win for the three-year-old Midshipman gelding, after he took the $150,000 Hawthorne Derby in October.

At the start it was 33-1 outsider Fountain Run who took the field of seven into the clubhouse turn, completing a quarter-mile in :24.34 and half-mile in :48.34. While Fountain Run had an easy lead, jockey Walter Rodriguez had Anegada on the rail in sixth, about eight lengths off the lead.

At the quarter-pole, Rodriguez began to move Anegada to the outside, and at the top of the lane swung to the six-path. Anegada took the lead just inside the final furlong but was all out to hold off the oncoming Final Gambit, who was storming down the center of the stretch.

In the final jump, Anegada was able to keep his nose in front to get the victory.

Anegada was bred in Kentucky by Leonard Supchak and is out of the multiple Stakes-winning mare, Love Cove (Not For Love). In addition to Anegada, Love Cove is also the dam of Stakes winner Bibby (Stormy Atlantic), Stakes-placed Diamond Hands (Frosted), and Stakes-placed Broken Hearts Bay (Super Saver).

In addition to Anegada, Midshipman is also the sire of 2025 two-time Graded Stakes winner, Surface to Air; two-time Stakes winner, Kontiki; and Stakes winners Snow Face Princess (Bolton Landing Stakes); Royal Testament (Rosie’s Stakes); Gerrards Cross (Colleen Stakes); Navy Seal and One Last Chance.

Midshipman will stand the 2026 breeding season at Jonabell Farm for $15,000, stands and nurses.
