Essential Time picked the perfect time to break his maiden when he rallied from off the pace to win the $150,000 Clever Trevor Stakes by just over a length at Remington Park Sept. 28.
The two-year-old gelded son of Essential Quality entered the race off his sharp runner-up finish in his career debut at Remington Park on Sept. 6. Essential Time becomes the second Stakes winner for his dual Champion freshman sire, Essential Quality.
Essential Time broke alertly and was unhurried early as he raced at the rear of the field through the opening stages of the six-and-a-half-furlong contest. Rooster J went to the front to set the pace, and he was tracked closely by Canned Heat through the opening half mile.
Essential Time began making up ground entering the far turn, then swung three-wide at the top of the stretch. He continued to reel in the leaders, splitting rivals in deep stretch to take the lead, eventually drawing off to an easy win.
Essential Time was bred in Kentucky by D.J. Stable and is out of the multiple Stakes-place mare, Twilight Curfew (Twirling Candy). Twilight Curfew is from the immediate family of Fair Maiden (Street Boss), winner of the G1 La Brea Stakes and First Resort (Uncle Mo), winner of the G2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. Third dam is Secret Status (A.P. Indy), winner of the G1 Kentucky Oaks and G1 Mother Goose.
Essential Time is the eighth winner and second Stakes winner for his sire, Essential Quality, who is also the sire of the undefeated filly, Chopsticks, winner of the Ellis Park Debutante. Chopsticks will make her next start in the G1 Frizette Stakes at Belmont at the Big A on Oct. 4.
