Essential Lady overcame a stumbling start to strike from just off the pace to win the Curtis Sampson Oaks by two-and-three-quarter lengths at Canterbury Park on Saturday, June 27.
The three-year-old daughter of Essential Quality, who was making both her Stakes debut and her first start outside California, was bumped by Stratia coming out of the starting gate, causing her to stumble. She recovered quickly to gain a spot stalking the pace of Stratia as the field raced through the clubhouse turn and entered the backstretch.
Essential Lady continued to stalk Stratia down the backstretch and into the far turn while racing two wide. She was floated three-wide in the upper stretch but responded when driven for a bid in the stretch. She swept past Stratia to take the lead in the final furlong, eventually winning by just under three lengths. Tamarack got up for second, with Mendelssohns Comet taking third.
Essential Lady was bred in Kentucky by Randall E. Lowe and races as a homebred for Ranlo Investments. She is out of multiple Stakes/Graded Stakes winner Lady Shipman (Midshipman), and is a half-sister to multiple Graded Stakes winner, Golden Pal (G1 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint).
Two-time Eclipse Award winner Essential Quality was represented by 19 winners in his first crop and has sired five Stakes winners already in 2026. In addition to Essential Lady, he is the sire of Stakes winners The Puma (G3 Tampa Bay Derby), Bull by the Horns (Rushaway Stakes), My World (Jerome Stakes), and Black Hornet (Black Gold Stakes).
