Sweet victory for Winterberry in Woodbine’s Bison City Stakes

Frosted filly goes gate-to-wire to earn her third Stakes win

Winterberry took the lead right out of the starting gate and turned back a mild bid from stablemate Shifty in the stretch on her way to capturing the $250,000 Bison City Stakes for three-year-old fillies at Woodbine Racecourse on August 9.

The Bison City win was the third Stakes victory for the daughter of Frosted, who improved her record to four wins and a third-place finish in eight career starts.

Winterberry broke well and went right to the lead under jockey Patrick Husbands. She easily settled into a comfortable gallop, maintaining a three-length lead over Hibiscus through the clubhouse turn and into the backstretch. Winterberry’s stablemate and the betting favorite, Shifty (Medaglia d’Oro), tracked those two from third, another length further back.

Winterberry continued to maintain a comfortable gallop into the far turn, even though her rivals had closed her gap down to about two lengths. By this time, Hibiscus was under a drive and not responding to jockey Pietro Moran’s urgings, but Shifty loomed a threat as she took over second and set her sights on Winterberry.

Winterberry switched leads at the top of the stretch and continued to maintain her lead, eventually crossing the wire two-and-a-half lengths ahead of Shifty. Aristella closed belatedly to take third.

Bred in Ontario by Anderson Farms Ont., Winterberry is out of Dreams Are Free, a winning daughter of Bellamy Road. Dreams Are Free is out of Stakes-placed Off Limits and is a half-sister to G1-placed Off Topic (by Street Sense).

Sire of 35 Stakes winners, Frosted is represented by 2025 G3 Gotham Stakes winner Flood Zone; Post Time, winner of the Deputed Testimony Stakes; White Rocks, winner of the Cincinnati Trophy Stakes at Turfway Park, and Frost At Dawn who took the Listed Cecil Frail Stakes at Haydock.
