Purr Sea cruises to smooth victory in Hawthorne’s Showtime Deb Stakes

Juvenile filly by Midshipman never threatened and earns her first Stakes win

Purr Sea took the lead after the first quarter-mile and never looked back on her way to posting a three-and-a-half length victory in the Showtime Deb Stakes at Hawthorne Nov. 6.

The victory by the two-year-old daughter of Midshipman improved her record to two wins and a third-place finish (in the Arlington-Washington Lassie) in three career starts.

Ridden once again by Rocco Bowen, Purr Sea was asked for speed out of the gate and soon overtook Oeuvre to take the lead. Purr Sea raced two-wide through most of the race but continued to hold a two- to three-length advantage throughout the race. She was then hand-ridden through the stretch on her way to posting a comfortable three-and-a-half length victory.

Purr Sea was bred in Illinois by her owner, S D Brilie. She is out of the winning mare, Kitty’s Castle, and is a half-sister to Stakes-placed Cat Attack.

Midshipman’s 16% career Black Type horses from starters continues to be among the best in the business, and only Into Mischief can top his six 100+ Beyers this year. In addition to Purr Sea Midshipman is also represented by Averly Jane, recent winner of the Listed Indian Summer Stakes and Special Reserve, winner of the G2 Phoenix Stakes at Keeneland. In addition, Midshipman is the sire of 2021 Graded Stakes winners Royal Ship (G2), Naval Laughter (G3) and Kopenhagen (G3 Grande Premio Parana in Brazil).
