Our Last Chance emphatic winner of John Wayne Stakes at Prairie Meadows

Midshipman gelding draws off in the stretch to notch his first Stakes victory

Our Last Chance took the lead at the top of the stretch and drew off to a sharp three-length victory in the $75,000 John Wayne Stakes at Prairie Meadows on Saturday, 24 June.

The gelded son of Midshipman, who earned his first Stakes win in the John Wayne, improved his record to 5-3-4 in 16 career starts. Our Last Chance has won two of three starts in 2023.

Our Last Chance broke on top, then conceded his position to favored Topper T. Our Last Chance remained forwardly placed, tracking the leader up the backstretch through swift opening fractions of :21.59 and :44.20. Our Last Chance moved to engage Topper T on the far turn, briefly dueled for the lead before taking command at the top of the stretch, eventually drawing off to win by three lengths.

Bred in Iowa by Warren Bush and Ron Eich, Our Last Chance is out of the winning mare, Abc Me Win. In addition to Our Last Chance, Abc Me Win has produced Stakes winner My Sister Madi and Stakes-placed Dancing Nicky. Abc Me Win herself is out of the Stakes-winning mare, Chachagua, and is a half-sister to multiple Stakes winner, Executive Choice.

Midshipman's 17% career Black Type horses from starters continues to be among the best in the business - no stallion under $55k can top it. His 25 Black Type horses in 2022 were more than any other stallion under $100k. They included G2 San Diego winner Royal Ship and G3 Pocahontas winner Fun and Feisty, plus two other juvenile Stakes winners.
