Morestride draws off to win the Howard B. Noonan Stakes

Midshipman colt breaks through to earn first Stakes win

Morestride took command a furlong from the wire and drew off to win the six-furlong Howard B. Noonan Stakes by two-and-a-half lengths at Mahoning Valley Race Course April 10.

The three-year-old son of Midshipman notched his first Stakes victory in the Noonan, while improving his record to three wins and one second-place finish in four career starts. Morestride was one of three sons of Midshipman in the race, along with Brig (third) and Henry Mac (fourth).

Morestride was settled into second early, content to stalk the leading pair of Brig and Esplanade. The dark bay colt made his move on the far turn, shifting out wide for a clear run at the leaders. He surged to the lead with a furlong left to run and pulled off to win comfortably by close to three lengths.

Morestride was bred in Ohio by Steve M. DeMaiolo and is out of Smart Stride, a winning daughter of Smart Strike. Morestride’s second dam is the multiple Stakes winner, Shawklit Mint (G2 Vagrancy H.) and is a half-sister to Stakes winners Mr. Shawklit (G3) and Shawklit Man and G1-placed Her She Shawklit.

Morestride is the third Stakes winner of the spring for his sire, Midshipman, who has also sired Wink (Melody of Colors Stakes) and Happy Sailor (Bara Lass Stakes). Midshipman continues to be a consistent sire of Black Type horses. His 17% career Black Type horses from starters continues to be among the best in the business – no stallion under $50K can do better.

Midshipman is standing the 2021 breeding season at Jonabell Farm for $7,500 stands and nurses.
