Leucothea overpowers rivals to win the Desi Arnaz Stakes

Second straight Stakes win for juvenile daughter of Midshipman

Leucothea took command at the top of the stretch and was never threatened as she powered to a three-length victory in the Listed Desi Arnaz Stakes at Del Mar Nov. 10.

The two-year-old Midshipman filly has now won two consecutive Stakes races; she took the Anoakia Stakes at Santa Anita by eight-and-a-half lengths Oct. 14.

Leucothea was content to race in second, just behind the early leader, Biddy Duke. Leucothea ranged up to challenge Biddy Duke on the far turn, and quickly swept to the front in a few strides. She then began drawing off through the lane, eventually crossing the wire an easy winner.

Bred in Kentucky by Woods Edge Farm, Leucothea is out of the Southern Halo mare, Any For Love, winner of the G1 Mil Guineas in Argentina. Leucothea is a half-sister to Graded Stakes-placed Distorted Love, by Distorted Humor.

Midshipman has sired over 25 Stakes winners, including Relentless Dancer, winner of the Louisiana Legacy Stakes. In addition, Midshipman is the sire of 2019 Graded Stakes winners Tweet (G1 Grande Premio Joao Cecilio Ferraz in Brazil), Mr Vargas (G3 Green Flash Stakes) and Old Shipman (G3 Grande Premio Presidente Augusto de Souza Queiroz in Brazil).

Midshipman will stand the 2020 breeding season at Jonabell Farm in Kentucky for a fee of $8,500, stands and nurses.
