The Heat is on

As many meetings in the US are lost to the big freeze, racing in Florida continued with an Elusive Quality filly once again scoring by an impressive margin

It was hardly surprising that Elusive Heat was given the 'Rising Star' accolade by the Thoroughbred Daily News on her debut at Belmont Park in October when she scorched to a five-and-a-half length victory.

The Elusive Quality filly, who has just turned three, resumed on 4 January in the G3 Old Hat Stakes, in which she was nosed out at the wire, but she made up for that narrow defeat with another eyecatching win - this time by 13-and-a-quarter lengths - in an allowance race at Gulfstream Park on Thursday. Over six furlongs (1200m), she stopped the clock at 1:08.94.

Elusive Heat's sales figures reflect her very attractive breeding: a $425,000 yearling and $750,000 breeze-up purchase, she is out of the 11-time Graded Stakes winner Xtra Heat, victrix of the G1 Prioress Stakes and runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Sprint. In the past 12 months, Elusive Quality has also been responsible for the Breeders' Cup Classic winner Raven's Pass, who is now standing at stud for Darley in Ireland, and G3 winners Elusive Bluff, Elusive Warning and Evasive.
