Debt Ceiling tenacious winner of New Castle Stakes

Son of Discreet Cat turns back challenge of Cinco Charlie in deep stretch to win by a half-length

Debt Ceiling battled with favorite Cinco Charlie throughout much of the six-furlong New Castle Stakes before finally putting away that rival nearing the wire to win by a half-length.

A five-year-old gelded son of Discreet Cat, Debt Ceiling was returning to Stakes company for the first time in two years. As a two-year-old, Debt Ceiling won his first three starts, which included victories in the Rollicking Stakes at Pimlico and the G3 Bashford Manor at Churchill Downs.

Bred in Kentucky by Brandywine Farm, Debt Ceiling is out of the Stakes-winning Marquetry mare, Top Marks. Debt Ceiling is a half-brother to multiple Stakes-placed Dean’s List (by Holy Bull) and Notional Debt (by Notional), and hails from the immediate family of G2 Breeders’ Futurity winner, Mountain Cat.

Discreet Cat had a fantastic year in 2015 with nine individual black-type winners, which is more than any other stallion standing for less than $25,000.  In addition to the aforementioned Debt Ceiling, Discreet Cat is also the sire of Dads Caps, winner of back-to-back editions of the G1 Carter Handicap, and Secret Compass, winner of the G1 Chandelier Stakes.
