Sovereignty reigns supreme in G1 Breeders’ Cup Classic

Reigning Horse of the Year and future Darley stallion caps off stellar career with impressive win

Reigning Horse of the Year Sovereignty put an exclamation point on what’s been a tremendous racing career with a powerful performance to win the G1 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland Oct. 31.

The four-year-old son of Into Mischief, who is set to join the Darley stallion roster at Jonabell Farm, added the Classic to a resume that already included victories in the G1 Kentucky Derby, G1 Belmont Stakes, G1 Travers Stakes, and G1 Whitney. Completing the Classic trifecta were The Puma (by Essential Quality) and fellow Godolphin homebred, Knightsbridge (by Nyquist), who like Sovereignty will join the stallion ranks at Darley America in 2027.

Sent off as the 9-5 second choice to defending champion Forever Young, Sovereignty was guided back in the field as Knightsbridge went to the lead and set an easier pace than was expected.

Forever Young was intent on not allowing Knightsbridge to get too far ahead and G1 Preakness Stakes winner, Napoleon Solo, was three wide and prominent. Knightsbridge very much had things his own way up front, and Ryusei Sakai aboard Forever Young began to urge his mount for more approaching the quarter pole, but Sovereignty glided up on the outside, clearly moving the of them.

Roused to the lead in upper stretch, he widened into the final furlong and proved a comfortable winner by one-and-three-quarter lengths as The Puma ran a valiant race to be second. Knightsbridge held for third, while Forever Young faltered in the final furlong to finish fifth, a spot behind his compatriot T O Password.

Sovereignty is the fourth foal out of Crowned, an unraced daughter of former Darley stalwart, Bernardini. Crowned is out of Mushka (Empire Maker), a multiple Graded Stakes winner that captured the G1 Juddmonte Spinster and was second in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic.
