Built prompted the early pace from third before taking command on the far turn on his way to a one-and-a-half length victory in the $300,000 Listed Louisville Thoroughbred Society Stakes at Churchill Downs on Saturday, Sept. 12.
The four-year-old son of Hard Spun, who entered the race off a sharp score in the G2 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Stakes at Saratoga, looks to have set himself up perfectly for a start in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Keeneland on Oct. 31.
Ridden by Flavien Prat for trainer Wayne Catalano, Built broke alertly and settled into third as Harrodsburg took a narrow lead along the rail over Jack’s Promise, who was a half-length ahead of Built.
Built wore down Harrodsburg with five sixteenths remaining, brushed with an inner rival entering the lane and inched away nearing the three-sixteenths pole. Echo Again, who tracked in the two path before swinging four wide at the quarter pole, made a sustained challenge outside the leader through the final furlong but never drew even. Built covered the six-and-a-half furlong distance in 1:16.28.
Built was bred in Kentucky by Robert and Lawana Low and was purchased by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners for $260,000 at the 2024 Ocala Breeders’ Sales April two-year-olds in training sale. He is the first winner produced by the Curlin mare, Sea Garden, a half-sister to Graded Stakes winner, Glenville Gardens (Street Cry). Built’s immediate family also boasts multiple Graded Stakes winners Marley Vale (G1) and Indian Vale (G2).
Built is one of seven Stakes winners this year for his sire, Hard Spun, who is also represented by additional Graded Stakes winners Gas Me Up (G2 King Edward), Moon Spun (G2 Unbridled Sydney S.), Bold Journey (G3 Tom Fool), and Runaway Again (G3 Dominion Day S.).
