Moon Spun goes gate-to-wire in G2 Unbridled Sidney

Hard Spun mare gets her first Graded Stakes win
Moon Spun wins the G2 Unbridled Sidney

Moon Spun once again broke like a shot out of the starting gate and never looked back on her way to victory in the $500,000 G2 Unbridled Sidney Stakes at Churchill Downs on Friday, May 1.

The race marked the third career Stakes win – and first Graded win – for the five-year-old Hard Spun mare. She was victorious in the Ladies' Turf Sprint Stakes and Abundantia Stakes at Gulfstream over the winter.

Ridden once again by Javier Castellano, Moon Spun broke sharply and immediately went to the front. Always comfortable in the race, Moon Spun finished strongly down the stretch to win by three-quarters of a length over Shoot It True.

Moon Spun was bred in Kentucky by Jack Liebau Sr. from the Malibu Moon mare Moonlit Bay. She was an $80,000 purchase at the 2022 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale. She hails from the immediate family of G1 winners Tappan Street, Grace Adler, and Bullsbay.

Hard Spun's other Stakes winners this year include G3 Tom Fool winner Bold Journey and Kupuna, winner of the Colonel E.R. Bradley Stakes at Fair Grounds. Hard Spun was represented by 21 Stakes horses in 2025 - more than any other stallion standing for less than $45,000. A few of his Graded Stakes winners last year included Gas Me Up, winner of the G2 Joe Hernandez Stakes, Elysian Field, winner of the G3 Seaway Stakes and Pondering, winner of the G3 Bessarabian.

Hard Spun stands the 2026 breeding season at Jonabell Farm for $20,000, stands and nurses.
