Moon Spun shines in Gulfstream Park’s Abundantia Stakes

That’s now three straight wins for daughter of Hard Spun!

Town and Country Racing’s Moon Spun, making just her second start off more than a year layoff and first in a stakes, continued her comeback with a tenacious front-running triumph over multiple Graded Stakes winner Haulin Ice in the $100,000 Abundantia at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, Dec. 27.

The victory was the third straight win for the four-year-old daughter of Hard Spun, who improved her record to 4-3-1 in eight starts. She has earned $277,345.

A field of seven fillies and mares went to the post for the Abundantia. Moon Spun was hustled from her outside post and hooked up with 12-1 longshot Etrurian through an opening quarter mile in :21.54. Two-time G3 winner Haulin Ice, making her turf debut, settled alone in third behind the leaders.

Moon Spun inherited the lead after going a spirited half in :43.73 as Etrurian dropped out of contention and Haulin Ice moved up to challenge for the lead. Irad Ortiz Jr. set Haulin Ice down for a drive on the outside of Moon Spun but the leader would not yield, holding on to win by a neck.

Moon Spun was bred in Kentucky by Jack Liebau Sr. from the Malibu Moon mare Moonlit Bay. She was an $80,000 purchase at the 2022 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale. She hails from the immediate family of G1 winners Tappan Street, Grace Adler, and Bullsbay.

Moon Spun is one of 20 Stakes performers for Hard Spun in 2025, along with G2 winner Gas Me Up, G3 winners Pondering and Elysian Field, and Listed winner and G1-placed Highway Robber.

Hard Spun will stand the 2026 breeding season at Jonabell Farm for $20,000, stands and nurses.
