Yonkers closes with late rush to win G2 Shannon Stakes at Rosehill Gardens

Medaglia d’Oro gelding caps great comeback for jockey Glyn Schofield

Yonkers provided a perfect return to the saddle for jockey Glyn Schofield when he closed with a late rush to snag the G2 Shannon Stakes by a head over Discharged at Rosehill Gardens Sept. 25.

It was the first start of the spring season for the five-year-old Medaglia d’Oro gelding, who earned his first Stakes victory in the Shannon. The win also capped off a remarkable comeback for rider Glyn Schofield, who spent nine months on the sidelines while recovering from shoulder/neck surgery. Schofield had just returned to the saddle this week.

Yonkers was bred in Kentucky by Forging Oaks Farm LLC and is out of Anne of Kiev, a multiple Stakes-winning daughter of Oasis Dream. Yonkers hails from the immediate family of Stakes winner and G1 Yorkshire Oaks-placed Blessed Event and Sacrament, winner of the G2 Great Voltigeur Stakes and G2 Prix Jean de Chaudenay.

In addition to Yonkers, Medaglia d’Oro’s other 2021 Graded Stakes winners include Golden Sixty (multiple G1 winner and recently named Horse of the Year in Hong Kong for the second consecutive year), multiple Stakes winner Vigilantes Way (G3 Eatontown Stakes), Souper Escape (G3 Trillium Stakes), Risk Taking (G3 Withers), Beautiful Gift (G3 Santa Ysabel) and Moonlight d’Oro (G3 Las Virgenes).
