Tom’s Beauty shines at Santa Anita

Juvenile filly becomes second winner of the afternoon for her sire Astern

Tom’s Beauty shot through an opening along the inside rail and drew off in the stretch to win a five-furlong maiden special weight by one-and-three-quarter-lengths on the turf at Santa Anita October 2.

The two-year-old filly became the second winner of the afternoon for her sire, Astern. Less than 30 minutes earlier, his daughter Sail By took the G2 Miss Grillo Stakes at Belmont Park.

Tom’s Beauty was settled off the pace early as Love Gone Wild and Booze Runner battled for the lead through opening half-mile. Rounding the far turn, Tom’s Beauty was stuck behind a wall of horses and looking for a place to go. An opening finally appeared along the inside rail and Tom’s Beauty shot through it and took the lead with less than a furlong to run. The bay filly pulled away, eventually crossing the wire to win by daylight.

Bred in Kentucky by Nathan McCauley, Tom’s Beauty is out of Shanghai Beauty, a winning daughter of Munnings. Shanghai Beauty is a half-sister to multiple Graded Stakes winner, Secret Gypsy, winner of the G2 Distaff Handicap and G2 Honorable Miss Stakes.

In addition to Tom’s Beauty and Sail By, Astern is also the sire of recent Kentucky Downs winner Grael. Astern has also represented by additional North American winners Mainstay (G3-placed), The Arcadian Way and Brandon’smylawyer.
