Third career G1 winner for Street Boss

The Quarterback passes G1 test with brilliant Newmarket Handicap victory at Flemington

The Quarterback became the third career and first Australian-bred G1 winner for Street Boss when he came with a barnstorming finish to claim the G1 Newmarket Handicap over 1200m at Flemington, 12 March.

As is his usual pattern, The Quarterback settled at the rear of the field in the early stages. Jockey Craig Newitt pulled the five-year-old into clear galloping room with 300m remaining and The Quarterback sailed down the outside rail to grab victory in the final few strides.

Bred by Gilgai Farm, The Quarterback is out of the winning Encosta de Lago mare Soorena who is also the dam of multiple G2 winner and G1 ATC Derby runner-up Philippi. Soorena herself is a half-sister to Stakes-winning Hard Spun mare Spinning Jenny.

The Quarterback joins G1 King’s Bishop hero Capo Bastone and G1 Arkansas Derby victor Danza as elite level winners for Street Boss who is the sire of 21 career Stakes winners.

Street Boss stands at Jonabell Farm at a fee of $12,500 live foal, stands and nurses.
