Sweet success

Custard becomes the latest Stakes winner for Lonhro; son of Street Cry is second in G1 Queensland Deryb whilst Shamardal sires his second European winner

Lonhro has been enjoying a fantastic season, recording a strike rate of over 45 per cent for his runners and the young Darley sire notched up a new winner in the best style on 6 June when his daughter Custard broke her maiden in the Listed SAJC Oaklands Plate at Morphettville.

Having finished second on her previous two starts, the David Hayes-trained filly clearly relished the step up in trip to 1500m and having raced handily throughout, finished strongly to win by a long neck from Zip Pleasure.

Bred by Segenhoe Stud, Custard is from the Stakes-placed mare Serene Look, who is also dam of dual Listed winner Russian Caravan and G2 producer Angelic Smile. Now racing for Tim and Jackie Hughes, she was purchased for $250,000 at the 2008 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.

Lonhro (pictured) has now sired three Black type winners and a further 11 Black type placers. He stands at Darley’s Kelvinside Stud at a fee of $33,000 including GST.

Also on Saturday, Street Cry's son Shocking narrowly missed out on victory in the G1 Queensland Derby, beaten just a neck by Court Ruler.

A day earlier, first-season sire Shamardal sired his second northern hemisphere winner in the most impressive fashion when Below Zero took the 1000m maiden at Bath by an astounding eight lengths.

Trained by Mark Johnston (who of course trained Shamardal himself during his juvenile year), Below Zero made all the running and pulled clear of the field with a furlong left to run and was eased down crossing the line.

Bred by Darley and running in the colours of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed al Maktoum, Below Zero is out of the Caerleon mare Chilly Start who is herself a half-sister to the great Lammtarra.

Shamardal, who stands at Kelvinside at a fee of $27,500 including GST, has sired seven winners in Australia to date, including the Stakes-placed duo Marquardt and Premardal.
