Son of Hard Spun lands third career G1

Le Romain wins the Canterbury Stakes in a thrilling finish

Leading son of Hard Spun, Le Romain, scored his third career G1 win in the Canterbury Stakes over 1300m at Royal Randwick on Saturday March 4.

Racing on what was heavily rain-affected turf, Le Romain claimed a thrilling victory from Champion Australian sprinter Chautauqua thanks to superior race tactics. Settling one off the speed throughout the running, jockey Glyn Schofield elected to race up the outside rail where the duo were able to reel in Chautauqua who was tough in defeat.

Bred by Mr Mark Carusi, Le Romain is the sole runner for the Strategic mare Mignard, who was a placegetter in the G2 Silver Slipper Trial. She hails from the family of Dubai’s Champion 3YO sprinter Long John who is a son of Street Cry.

Le Romain, a previous winner of the G1 Randwick Guineas on the same race day last year, is one of nine G1 winners for his sire Hard Spun, alongside the likes of Hard Not To Like, Wicked Strong and Questing.

Hard Spun is standing the 2017 breeding season at Jonabell Farm for $45,000, stands and nurses.
