S S Quality put away Power Grid in deep stretch on his way to winning a seven-furlong maiden special weight contest by three-quarters of a length at Colonial Downs on Saturday, Sept. 6.
The two-year-old colt, who entered the contest off a runner-up finish going six furlongs at Colonial on Aug. 27, became the third winner for his freshman sire, Essential Quality.
S S Quality, last out of the starting gate, was settled near the rear of the seven-horse field as Elston Gunn and Undertaker battled for the early lead. S S Quality began making up ground heading into the far turn, sweeping four-wide for a clear run as Power Grid assumed the lead at the top of the lane.
S S Quality engaged Power Grid a furlong from the wire and the pair disputed the lead until deep stretch, when S S Quality finally put away his rival and began to pull away. Power Grid easily held second, close to five lengths ahead of G Q Worthy in third.
Bred by G. Watts Humphrey Jr. in Kentucky, S S Quality is out of the Lemon Drop Kid mare, Romantic Vision, winner of the G1 Juddmonte Spinster Stakes and G3 Locust Grove Stakes. Romantic Vision’s dam, Perfect For You (Giant’s Causeway), won the Holiday Inaugural Stakes and was third in the G3 Dogwood Stakes during her career. In addition to Romantic Vision, she’s also the dam of Stakes-placed Hard Attack (Hard Spun).
Dual Champion Essential Quality is also the sire of the undefeated filly, Chopsticks, winner of the Ellis Park Debutante in her second start and Aye Eye, who rocketed from last-to-first to win his career debut at Saratoga Aug. 8.
