Phar Lap Stakes to Toydini

Bernardini gelding becomes the fifth southern hemisphere Stakes winner for his sire

After receiving the unkindest cut of all, Bernardini gelding Toydini has resumed this campaign as a different horse, as evident by his two-and-a-qurter length victory at Rosehill on 23 March in the G2 Phar Lap Stakes over 7.5f.

Having his second run back of this campaign, the Guy Walter-trained runner had always shown above average ability, running a cracking race first-up last campaign when second at G3 level, after finishing his juvenile campaign with a fourth at G1 level.

Settling back in the field, jockey Blake Shinn angled Toydini to the outside of the field as they rounded the home turn, where he showed a good turn of foot to gather in the leader Ninth Legion, while Commands colt Force Command came along the inside to take third.

Trainer Guy Walter indicated that Toydini would head to the Carbine Club Stakes in three week’s time before heading to the Frank Packer Plate with a possibly tilt at the G1 Queensland Derby on the cards.

Bred by Mr RJ Bergstrom and Mrs J K Bergstrom, Toydini is out of the dual Listed winning, multiple G1 placed Johan Cruyff mare Johan’s Toy, a half-sister to G2 winner Extra Zero and the G3 winner Operetta Lass.

The sire of 35 Stakes performers including G1 winners To Honor And Serve, Biondetti, Stay Thirsty, Alpha, A.Z. Warrior and the recent juvenile winner Ruud Awakening, Bernardini is standing the current season at a fee of $150,00 stand and nurses.
