Nitrogen took command midway through the far turn and drew off through the stretch on her way to a commanding 17-length victory in the G3 Wonder Again Stakes at Saratoga on Saturday, 7 June.
It was the fifth straight Stakes victory for the three-year-old daughter of Medaglia d’Oro, and her first win of any kind on the dirt. Originally scheduled for a mile-and-a-sixteenth on the inner turf course, the race was switched to the sloppy main track after a deluge of rain wreaked havoc on turf races carded for the program.
Reduced to a field of three and downgraded from a Grade 2 to a Grade 3 contest, Nitrogen wasn’t fazed in the least by the change as she put away stablemate Bessie Abott on the turn and cruised to victory. Trainer Mark Casse indicated after the race that keeping Nitrogen in the Wonder Again, despite the move to the main track, would keep her on schedule for her next start, the G1 Belmont Oaks on the turf at Saratoga 5 July.
Nitrogen has won five of her eight starts and has earned $1,146,604.
Nitrogen was bred in Kentucky by her owner, D.J. Stable LLC, and is out of the mare, Tiffany Case, a Stakes-placed daughter of Uncle Mo. In addition to Nitrogen, Tiffany Case is also the dam of Love to Shop (by Violence), winner of the Listed Toronto Cup and second in both the G2 Bessarabian Stakes and G3 Ontario Fashion Stakes.
In addition to Nitrogen, Medaglia d’Oro is also the sire of Spirit of St Louis, a two-time G1 winner on the turf in 2025 and G1 Kentucky Oaks heroine, Good Cheer.
Medaglia d’Oro is standing the 2025 breeding season at Jonabell Farm for $75,000, stands and nurses.
