Medaglia d’Oro: he’s got the Midas touch

Only Northern Dancer and Storm Cat have sired more million-dollar yearlings in a year
Medaglia d'Oro colt brings $2.1M at Keeneland September

In retrospect, one might have taken a clue from Medaglia d'Oro's very successful two-year-old sales season earlier this year that 2018 was going to be another stellar year for the perennial leading sales sire. His juvenile sire average of $526,624 still leads the way but at the moment will have to take a second seat to his yearling sales.

We've written before about how he had the top-priced colt and filly at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga, siring three of the five million-dollar horses overall. And we might also have mentioned that he has had seven sale-toppers at the sales over the last 10 years, a figure that's more than any other sire.

What we didn't mention - because we didn't know yet - was that the additional five million-dollar yearlings at Keeneland September elevate him into rarified air yet again. Only the great Northern Dancer and Storm Cat have ever sired more in a single year. And he's top among all active North American sires with eight:

Although you've probably seen the results by now, we'd like to show you the complete list of Medaglia d'Oro's eight million-dollar yearlings this year:

Nearly one in five of his yearlings sold for $1 million or more this year. And nearly 50% of his yearlings have brought $500,000 or more.
