Henny Hughes progeny take first and third at Aqueduct

Shoe Penny needs no luck to be 14th Henny Hughes winner

Easily taking the lead from the start of the six furlong event for juvenile fillies, Shoe Penny showed her feet to all challengers, comfortably pulling ahead to win by three lengths under Alan Garcia. She added to sire Henny Hughes' tally by becoming his 14th winner. Shoe Penny was making only her second start, but is already rewarding owners South Elkhorn Stable and trainer Kiaran McLaughlin with her ability to relax on the lead.

Not having such a good time was fellow daughter of Henny Hughes, Thatagirl, who stumbled coming out of the gate. She recovered well, but had to be steadied on the turn, and then after pulling wide, was cut off in the stretch. She still was willing to the end, and finished a gallant third, five lengths behind the clear winner and still closing strongly.

Shoe Penny was bred by Larry Byer from the Unbridled mare Unbridled Glory, who has produced four winners from as many foals to race, including Stakes-placed Boston Glory. Thatagirl, out of Miss Bridget Jones, by Peaks And Valleys, races as a homebred for Edward Lipton.

Henny Hughes is represented by 13 other winners from his first crop, including the TDN Rising Star Fort Hughes, and Stakes-placed Wealthy Aviator. His $700,000 Fasig-Tipton Calder sale topper was the highest priced of any two-year-old sold in 2010 at public auction.
