Making his Stakes debut, it was two-year-old Henny Hughes colt She Digs Me who ruled in the Tyro Stakes at Monmouth Park July 24. The colt entered the five and one-half furlong race off a Maiden Special Weight score at Churchill Downs in his most recent start.
Breaking towards back of the field, She Digs Me settled comfortably into position to stalk the pacesetters. Going into the turn, the son of Henny Hughes began to make his move and powered past the competition in the stretch to easily take the victory.
She Digs Me is the first foal for the Stakes winning mare Stage Stop, by Valid Expectations. Stage Stop is a full sister to Stakes winner Valid Move, and is out of Heavenly Prize Handicap winner Winning Move. The colt was bred by Mike G. Rutherford.
The juvenile colt becomes the first second-crop stakes winner for Henny Hughes with the Tyro Stakes victory. Henny Hughes has also sired G3 winner Henny Hound and Stakes winners Fort Hughes and Midnight Visit. The sophomore sire was a record-breaking world champion sprinter. He is the only three-year-old ever to win both the G1 King's Bishop Stakes and the G1 Vosburgh Stakes.
