Five G1 winners for Medaglia d’Oro

Champagne d’Oro becomes the second consecutive winner of the G1 Acorn Stakes for her outstanding sire; new Stakes winner for Street Cry

Twelve months after Gabby’s Golden Gal opened her G1 account in scintillating fashion in the Acorn, her paternal half-sister Champagne d’Oro took the 2010 renewal of the prestigious one-mile contest in style to become the fifth individual G1 winner for her sire Medaglia d'Oro (pictured).

Breaking smartly from the gate, Champagne d’Oro was soon in front and never relinquished her lead, repelling the challenge in the stretch from favourite Amen Hallelujah to cross the wire in front.

This was the first victory at Stakes level for the Eric J Guillot-trained filly and her third win overall. Her previous best performance came in March of this year when she finished second in the G2 Fair Ground Oaks.

Bred by Liberation Farm, Champagne d’Oro is out of the Stakes-winning G1-placed mare Champagne Glow (Saratoga Six), herself a half-sister to G1 winners Jurado and Grand Canyon.

Medaglia d’Oro is enjoying another outstanding year in 2010, siring no fewer than 12 individual Stakes performers including three G1 winners – Gabby’s Golden Gal, Warrior’s Reward and now Champagne d’Oro.

Also on Saturday, Street Cry recorded a new Stakes winner when his four-year-old son Southdale landed the G3 Eclipse Stakes at Woodbine.
