An extremely powerful Tool!

Hard Spun’s three-year-old son Maftool the best in UAE 2,000 Guineas

Prior to the G3 UAE 2,000 Guineas on February 12, Godolphin’s three-year-old Hard Spun colt, Maftool, had won or placed in five of six career starts, including a victory in the G3 Somerville Stakes at Newmarket last fall. Following a photo in this year’s renewal of the 2,000 Guineas, he added to his growing race resume by turning the tables on Dubawi’s Mubtaahij who go the best of him in the Guineas Trial on January 15th.

Maftool stalked the leader on the outside in the one-mile event and was able to put himself in front as the field entered the stretch. Mubtaahiz fought hard to get by the three-year-old colt but found himself a head short at the wire.

Bred in Kentucky by Charles Kidder & J. K. and Linda Griggs, Maftool is out of a half-sister to G2 winner Abraaj, Listed winner and track record-setter Leelanau and other Listed winner All Trumps.

Hard Spun is coming off his best year yet in the sire ranks. Last year, he was the sire of G1 winners Wicked Strong, winner of the Wood Memorial, Hardest Core, winner of the Arlington Million and Hard Not To Like, winner of the Jenny Wiley. He was also represented by other Graded winners Big John B, Hard Enough and Reload. Only one other stallion standing in North America had more Group or Graded winners in 2014.

Hard Spun stands for a 2015 fee of $35,000 stands and nurses.
