Encino made his turf debut a winning one, rallying from just off the pace to win the Listed Jonathan B. Schuster Memorial Stakes by one-and-a-quarter lengths at Horseshoe Indianapolis on Saturday, 5 July.

The four-year-old son of Nyquist set a new course record in the process, covering 8.5 furlongs over a firm turf course in 1:39.38, besting the previous record of 1:39.49.

Breaking alertly under jockey Luan Machado, Encino was content to settle a few lengths off the pacesetting Runaway Storm throughout most of the race. Encino began to close in on the longtime leader on the far turn, then turned on the afterburners in the stretch to take command, crossing the wire one-and-a-quarter lengths in front of Runaway Storm. Money Supply held off Double Clutch to take third.

Encino was bred in Kentucky by Godolphin and is out of Glittering Jewel, a winning daughter of Bernardini. Glittering Jewel is a half-sister to Champion and Darley sire, Street Sense, and to the Stakes winner Elusive Sparkle (by Elusive Quality).

Nyquist is the sire of six Graded/Group Stakes winners in 2025, with only Into Mischief having more. Nyquist’s top runners are headlined by Cavalieri, winner of the G1 Beholder Mile and G3 La Canada; Crimson Advocate, who captured the G2 Duke of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot; Gosger, winner of the G3 Lexington Stakes and runner-up in the G1 Preakness; Nysos, winner of the G3 Triple Bend and runner-up in the G1 Churchill Downs Stakes; Verity, winner of the G2 Beaumont Stakes at Keeneland; and Tenma, winner of the G2 Santa Anita Oaks and G3 Las Virgenes Stakes.
