Darley’s young sires hot commodities in Maryland

Six first and second-year sires hit with six figure lots

Six Darley sires with either two or three-year-olds on the track in 2011 were represented during the first session of  Fasig-Tipton’s Maryland sale on May 23 and all six were very well received with each having at least one $100,000+ offering sell.

Haskell Invitational winner Any Given Saturday (pictured) was quickest out of the gate as hip number 25, consigned by Ciaran Dunne’s Wavertree Stables, Inc., acting as agent, brought $200,000. The nice looking colt was one of two for his sire that surpassed six figures as hip 289, consigned by Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds LLC, agent, was knocked down for $165,000 with Bob Baffert signing the ticket.

It was from this same consignment that fillies from two of Darley’s other first-year sires also went beyond $100,000. Hip 212, by G1 King's Bishop winner Hard Spun, and hip 252, by Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense, brought $200,000 and $280,000 respectively, with the latter coming in as the second highest-priced offering of the session.

Hip number 155, a filly by other first-year sire, world champion three-year-old Discreet Cat (consigned by Kirkwood Stables, agent), also was an attention getter as her dam also produced Woodlander, he a son of Discreet Cat’s sire Forestry, thus making her a three-quarter sister to the multiple G3 winner.

Two of three second-year Darley sires also made good impressions during the first day of the sale with colts by Henny Hughes and Rockport Harbor bringing $200,000 and $100,000, respectively. The former was another that hailed from the barn of Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds LLC, agent, while the latter was from the consignment of Eisaman Equine acting as agent.
