Consecutive wins sees son of Hard Spun claim second Stakes victory

Gatting races away with the G2 WATC Derby in Australia

Talented son of Hard Spun Gatting recorded his second consecutive Stakes success in the G2 WATC Derby over 2400m at Ascot in Western Australia on Saturday 8 April.

The three-year-old gelding enjoyed an easy run around midfield before the field started bunch in the final four furlongs. Although Gatting appeared to be in a challenging position jockey Matthieu Autier maintained his composure as he waited for a gap to open upon turning for home. It was then that the stayer unleashed an unrivalled turn of foot and cruised to a second Stakes victory.

Gatting was bred in Australia by Kingston Thoroughbreds and races for Impressing Racing Pty. Ltd. He is out of the Lonhro mare Stubborn, who is a full sister to the G3 winning filly Trim. Gatting’s granddam Firm was also a winner at G3 grade.

Hard Spun has had an exceptional start to the 2017 racing year, having now sired six individual Stakes winners. In addition to Gatting’s multiple Stakes successes, Hard Spun is the sire of Le Romain (G1 Canterbury Stakes, G3 Southern Cross Stakes), Promising Run (G2 Al Rashidiya), Nomorerichblondes (G3 UAE Oaks), Taghleeb (G3 W.L. McKnight), and Hard Aces (G3 Tokyo City Cup).

Hard Spun is standing the 2017 breeding season at Jonabell Farm for $45,000 stands and nurses.
