Bold Journey turns back time, goes last-to-first to win G3 Tom Fool Stakes

Hard-knocking Hard Spun gelding earns his third Stakes victory

Bold Journey turned back the clock when going from last-to-first to take the G3 Tom Fool Stakes at Aqueduct by a nose on Saturday, Feb. 28.

The ultra-consistent seven-year-old gelding by Hard Spun won his third Stakes win in the Tom Fool, improving his record to 8-11-3 in 34 lifetime starts.

Bold Journey brushed the side of the stall at the start and was away last, spotting the rest of the field at least five lengths as One Nine Hundred and Breslau set a swift pace down the backstretch. Bold Journey began to rally on the far turn, racing six-wide as he attempted to reel in the longtime leaders.

One Nine Hundred had shaken off Breslau to take command in the stretch and appeared to be on his way to victory. Bold Journey was just getting into gear, however, and continued to close relentlessly on the far outside, getting up in the final strides to win by a nose over Full Moon Madness, who nipped One Nine Hundred for the place spot.

Bred in New York by Fred W. Hertrich lll & John D. Fielding, Bold Journey is out of the winning Super Saver mare Polly Freeze, making him a half-brother to Americanrevolution, winner of the G1 Cigar Mile.

Bold Journey is the third Stakes winner of the year for Hard Spun, joining Kupuna, recent winner of the Colonel E.R. Bradley Stakes at Fair Grounds and Moon Spun, winner of the Ladies Turf Sprint at Gulfstream Park.

Hard Spun was represented by 21 Stakes horses in 2025 - more than any other stallion standing for less than $45,000. A few of his Graded Stakes winners last year included Gas Me Up, winner of the G2 Joe Hernandez Stakes, Elysian Field, winner of the G3 Seaway Stakes and Pondering, winner of the G3 Bessarabian.

Hard Spun is standing the 2026 breeding season at Jonabell Farm for $20,000, stands and nurses.
