Heavily-favored Torn breaks maiden going eight furlongs at Remington Park

Juvenile colt becomes sire Regal Ransom’s seventh first crop winner

Regal Ransom upped his tally of first-crop winners on December 11 as his son Torn broke his maiden going one mile at Remington Park.

Sent off as the heavy 1-2 favorite, Torn sat just off the pacesetting Ice De La Thorn throughout the early stages of the race. In the stretch, Torn appeared to be making the winning move past the longtime leader, but was impeded significantly as Ice De La Thorn swerved repeatedly through the final furlong. Torn crossed the wire in second, but was promoted to first after Ice De La Thorn was disqualified by the stewards.

Torn was bred in Kentucky by Glory Days Breeding, Inc., and is out of Texas Tempest, a winning daughter of Bernardini. Torn is a half-brother to Purge, winner of the G1 Hill ‘n’ Dale Cigar Mile, G2 Jim Dandy, and G2 Peter Pan. He hails from the family of G1 winners Jersey Girl and Jersey Town.

Regal Ransom is also the sire of six other winners, including the Stakes-placed filly Freaky Kiki. Regal Ransom was one of the top three-year-olds of his crop and defeated Champion Blame in the G2 Super Derby when posting a Beyer Speed Figure of 110.
