Sail By sails by the field for an impressive debut win at Belmont

Becomes second winner for first-crop sire Astern in two weeks

The two-year-old filly Sail By became Astern's second career winner over the span of two weeks as she won on debut over Belmont's turf course going six furlongs in a swift 1:09 1/5. Mainstay got Astern off the mark on June 4th when she earned TDN RIsing Star status while also winning on debut at Monmouth on the main track.

Sail By broke well from the gate but retreated slowly as the field reached the half-mile mark and she could see them all as the field turned for home. And it might have appeared that the crowd had it right as she went off at 28-1, but if you blinked you missed it, and the debutante passed six others to win going away. Sail By was bred by Jeff Treadway and races in the name of his Treadway Racing Stable.

Two-year-olds from Astern's first crop were also well received at the sales with prices that included $375,000 and $340,000 for an average of $104,909. In the southern hemisphere he is represented by the undefeated two-year-old filly Seradess, winner of the Listed Cinderella Stakes in Australia, along with other "down under" juvenile Stakes winner Danger Strykes.

One of the best two and three-year-olds of his era, Astern retired to stud in 2018 as the highest-rated son of Medaglia d’Oro to enter Darley’s stallion ranks.
