Gerrards Cross returns to the winner’s circle in $100,000 Monmouth County Stakes

Three-year-old Midshipman filly notches her second Stakes victory

Gerrards Cross earned her second Stakes win with a gate-to-wire romp in the $100,000 Monmouth County Stakes over the Monmouth Park turf on Sunday, July 5.

The three-year-old daughter of Midshipman, who improved her record to 3-1-0 in six starts, now boasts two Stakes wins over the Monmouth Park turf course. As a juvenile in 2025, Gerrards Cross won the Colleen Stakes in her second start.

Gerrards Cross entered the race off a sharp, near-miss second-place finish in the Stormy Blues Stakes at Laurel Park on June 14, which followed a six-month layoff. Proving she had rounded back into form, the chestnut once again broke on top coming out of the starting gate and quickly opened up a length advantage under rider Cipriano Gil. Spinelli tracked from second, with Carolyncaroline in third.

Gerrards Cross continued to show the way through the far turn and to the top of the stretch, where she hit another gear and kicked clear of Spinelli. She continued to draw off through the stretch, eventually crossing the wire a two-and-a-quarter length winner. Spinelli held second, with Tap Into Grace getting up for third.

Gerrards Cross was bred in Florida and races as a homebred for James M. Chicklo. She is out of the Stakes-winning Concerto mare, Spanish Concert, and is a half-sister to the multiple Stakes-placed Dream Concert.

In addition to Gerrards Cross, Midshipman is also the sire of Anegada, a three-time Stakes winner who captured the $200,000 John B. Connelly Turf Cup at Sam Houston Race Park in January; Synthetic, winner of the Creole Stakes in May and Scar Ship, winner of the Prince Stakes in February.
