Cosmic Heat burns rivals in Santa Anita maiden contest

Two-year-old filly becomes winner #15 for freshman sire Maxfield!

Cosmic Heat came with a furious rally down the center of the course to blow past the leaders in the final strides to win a six-and-a-half furlong maiden optional claiming contest by a half-length at Santa Anita on Friday, Oct. 17. The two-year-old filly became the 15th winner for her freshman sire, Maxfield.

Making her first start for trainer Peter Eurton, Cosmic Heat was off a step slowly out of the gate and settled near the rear of the field early while racing along the inside rail. Patiently handled by jockey Antonio Fresu, Cosmic Heat began closing steadily along the rail heading into the far turn, then tipped to the outside at the top of the lane.

Set down for the drive with a furlong to run, Cosmic Heat displayed an impressive turn of foot to sweep past Tokala and Debby’s Gal to win by a half-length. Mimi’s Memory got up late to pip Debby’s Gal by a nose for second.

Bred in Kentucky by Susan Casner, Cosmic Heat is out of Five Star Rampage, a Stakes-winning daughter of Quality Road. In addition to her Stakes-winning dam, the immediate family also boasts Horse of the Year Tiznow and multiple Graded Stakes winners Tizdubai, Budroyale and Tarifa (Bernardini).

In addition to Cosmic Heat, Maxfield's other first-crop winners include his most recent TDN Rising Star, Englishman, who scored impressively on debut at Churchill, breaking his maiden by seven and one-quarter lengths while registering a 97 Beyer Speed Rating. He's also the sire of Max Ciao, winner of the I’m Smokin Stakes at Del Mar; Saratoga debut winner and TDN Rising Star, Five Bars, who finished third in her most recent start, the G1 Frizette; Saratoga debut MSW winners Boomington and Rock It Rob; other TDN Rising Star Magna Victor; Lilies N Paradise, debut winner at Churchill Downs (and now Stakes-placed at Delaware Park); Just Asap, a seven-length debut winner at Ellis Park (and now Stakes-placed at Monmouth Park), and recent Keeneland maiden winners Tingus Pingus and Lady Valor

Maxfield will stand the 2026 breeding season at Jonabell Farm for $50,000, stands and nurses.
