Bull by the Horns takes it to 'em to break his maiden at Gulfstream Park

Colt becomes 13th winner for Essential Quality!

Bull by the Horns took command at the top of the stretch and drew off in the final sixteenth of a mile to break his maiden by six-and-a-half lengths at Gulfstream Park Nov. 1, becoming the 13th first-crop winner for his sire, Essential Quality.

Making his second start for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., Bull by the Horns settled in the second flight and between rivals early on, as Thousand Spirits led the way through the opening half-mile. Bull by the Horns was asked for more on the far turn, looming three-wide as the field hit the top of the lane. He reeled in Thousand Spirits with a furlong to go and then drew off, hitting the wire an easy winner.

Bred in Kentucky by Ashview Farm and Colts Neck Stable, Bull by the Horns is out of the multiple Stakes-placed mare, No Sweat (by Blame). No Sweat’s dam, Coolwind (by Forest Wildcat), was a multiple Stakes winner and Graded Stakes-placed runner that has also produced Graded Stakes winner, Looking Cool (by Candy Ride).

Two-time Eclipse Award winner Essential Quality is the sire of three Stakes winners from his first crop, and 13 winners overall. His Stakes winners are My World, winner of the Nashua Stakes, Chopsticks, winner of the Ellis Park Debutante, and Essential Time, winner of the Clever Trevor Stakes at Remington Park.

Essential Quality will stand the 2026 breeding season at Jonabell Farm for $25,000, stands and nurses.
