Anegada slipped through an opening along the inside rail in the stretch and drew off to win the $150,000 Hawthorne Derby by a half-length on Sunday, Oct. 5.
The three-year-old gelding became the 85th Stakes winner for his sire, Midshipman.
Breaking smartly under jockey Luis Colon, Anegada was allowed to settle and raced near the back of the field while saving ground along the inside rail as Perry County led the way through the opening half-mile. Anegada was urged to move a bit closer to the leaders on the backstretch and loomed a threat on the far turn but was stuck behind a wall of horses with nowhere to go.
Anegada’s patience paid off as he slipped through a narrow opening along the rail in mid-stretch and reeled in the leaders to win going away. Maui Strong finished second, with Buttons and Lace taking third.
Anegada was bred in Kentucky by Leonard Supchak and is out of the multiple Stakes-winning mare, Love Cove (Not For Love). In addition to Anegada, Love Cove is also the dam of Stakes winner, Bibby (Stormy Atlantic), Stakes-placed Diamond Hands (Frosted), and Stakes-placed Broken Hearts Bay (Super Saver).
In addition to Anegada, Midshipman is also the sire of 2025 two-time Graded Stakes winner, Surface to Air; two-time Stakes winner, Kontiki; and Stakes winners Snow Face Princess (Bolton Landing Stakes); Royal Testament (Rosie’s Stakes); Gerrards Cross (Colleen Stakes); Navy Seal and One Last Chance.
