Two books that are a must read!
Given his phenomenal start at stud, it might not seem surprising that Medaglia d’Oro would attract the attention of the world’s top breeders since he entered stud in 2006. Just look at a sire record that reflects 7 G1 winners lead by Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra, 14 Graded winners, and a total of 26 stakes winners. His 16 stakes winners from his first crop ranks him at the top of the list in that category.
The names of the mares and/or their produce that are reflected in his most recent books of mares in 2010 and 2011, reads like a who’s who of some of the world’s top racehorses in recent memory. These include Bernardini, Rachel Alexandra, English Channel, Beautiful Pleasure, Ipe Tombe, Winter Memories, Turbulent Descent, Midshipman, Saint Liam, Super Saver, Giacomo, Draming of Anna, Memories of Silver and Serena’s Song. That said, find following a numeric overview of “unrivaled excellence” from his 2010 and 2011 books:
· 72 G1 winners
· 32 dams of G1 winners
· 82 G2 or G3 winners
· 40 G2 or G3 producers
The Blood-Horse MarketWatch newsletter just recently assessed, specifically, the 2010 books of all North American stallions and Medaglia d’Oro came out on top as the leader by Class Performance Index of those mares:
· Medaglia d’Oro – 13.00
· Street Cry – 10.95
· Distorted Humor – 10.48
· Smart Strike – 8.73
· Pulpit – 7.69
A cumulative, closer look at the mares bred to him and their female offspring these past two years reveals yet another impressive fact. Of the 49 G1 races for fillies and/or mares run in 2011, 36 of these have been won by mares (or their produce) in his 2010 and 2011 books. That’s nearly 75%!
His success on the racetrack, as well as the early success of his progeny, have had a direct impact on his fantastic sales record. Since 2007, when his first yearlings were sold, he has had more select session or select sales toppers than another stallion in North America - seven at last count. His yearlings have made up to $1.5 million while his 2-year-old sale horses have made up to $1.6 million.
· Medaglia d’Oro (8)
· Unbridled’s Song (6)
· A.P. Indy (5)
· Malibu Moon (5)
· Storm Cat (5)
And with his best of yearlings hitting the sales ring in 2012 and 2013, it’s a strong possibility that we’ll see the tote board reflecting a few other top-priced sale and session toppers.
