Trenchant digs deep to claim first Stakes victory

Son of Medaglia d'Oro the Listed Taj Rossi Series Final at Flemington

Trenchant showed great courage to claim his maiden Stakes victory in the Listed Taj Rossi Series Final Handicap over 1600m at Flemington on July 9.

A step up in weight and distance from a previous last start win at Flemington, the two-year-old son of Medaglia d'Oro settled off the speed to find cover in the opening stages of the race. Trenchant kept finding and fought on strongly when challenged by late-closer Futura in the final 50 metres, saluting by a nose for jockey Craig Williams.

A half-brother to Stakes winners Bello (Exceed And Excel) and Emblem (Shamardal), Trenchant is a homebred for Darley and out of the unraced mare Cara Bella who is in foal to Sidestep this season. The son of Medaglia d’Oro also hails from an impressive family of European Champions including Kirklees, Mastery and Magic Artist.

Medaglia d'Oro is experiencing yet another outstanding year in 2016 having sired 11 Blacktype winners so far. Leading that list is the champion filly Songbird, who remains undefeated in seven career starts. Her victories in 2016 include the G1 Santa Anita Oaks and G2 Summertime Oaks. In addition to Songbird, Medaglia d’Oro’s son Mshawish has illustrated his sire’s versatility by capturing the G1 Donn Handicap on the dirt after having won the G1 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap last year. Medaglia d’Oro’s worldwide influence is exemplified by the likes of Vancouver, a G1 winner in Australia last year, in addition to five additional Group winners in Australia in 2016.
