Shagaf rallies late to win the G3 Gotham Stakes

Son of Bernardini remains undefeated with determined one-length victory

Shagaf kept his perfect record intact as he rallied in deep stretch to win the G3 Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct March 5.

It was the third straight victory for the three-year-old son of Bernardini, who earned fifty points toward a start in the G1 Kentucky Derby.

Bred in Kentucky by Shadwell Farm, Shagaf is out of Muhaawara, a Stakes-winning daughter of Unbridled’s Song. Shagaf’s second dam is Habibti, winner of the G1 Hollywood Starlet and G1 Del Mar Debutante. In addition to Muhaawara, Habibti has produced Eldaafer, winner of the G2 Brooklyn Handicap and G3 Breeders’ Cup Marathon.

Bernardini had an incredible year in 2015 with four US G1 winners including G1 Champagne victor Greenpointcrusader and G1 Spinaway heroine Rachel’s Valentina. The stallion is already off to a strong start in 2016. In addition to Shagaf, Bernardini is the sire of Penwith, winner of the G2 Royal Delta Stakes and Sassicaia, winner of the G3 Toboggan.

Bernardini stands at Jonabell Farm for a fee of $100,000, stands and nurses.
