Lady Shipman easily navigates seventh career win

Midshipman daughter goes gate to wire at Saratoga

Coming into the Coronation Cup at Saratoga on August 3, Midshipman's ultra-consistent filly, Lady Shipman, hadn't done much wrong in her eight-race career.  She boasted six wins and two thirds so her role as the odds-on choice in her ninth career start wasn't too much of a surprise.  And she didn't disappoint either as the 3-5 favorite.

Quickly out of the gate, Lady Shipman assumed her normal position out in front like she had done many times before.  She set the pace through fast fractions of 21 1/5 and 43 3/5, and found herself 5 lengths in front at the wire while winning her fifth lifetime Stakes.  The final time of 1:00 4/5 was just one tick off the track record.

Named a TDN Rising Star when breaking her maiden by 11 lengths as a two-year-old last year, Lady Shipman is out of Sumthingtotalkabout, a half-sister to Stakes winner Rules Of War and Graded Stakes-placed Nanogram.  The filly's second dam is multiple Stakes winner Nannetta. The daughter of Midshipman was bred by Randall E. Lowe.

Among Midshipman's other top runners are San Pedro Stakes winner and highly-regarded Yiannis, recent Woodbine Stakes winner Her Majesty's Flag, Happy Ticket Stakes winner Naval Command, and G2 Fountain Of Youth Stakes-placed Frammento.

Midshipman, Eclipse Champion at two and Breeders' Cup Juvenile record setter, has seen his stock rise with continued success from his first crop, now sophomores of 2015.  He's among the leaders in his sire crop by earnings and is second among the group by percentage of Stakes winners from starters.
