Coomer a late comer at Churchill

Colt rallies to becomes Midshipman’s 17th winner

A November to remember for freshman sire Midshipman as five of his two-year-olds posted victories, including TDN Rising Star Lady Shipman (Gulfstream Park West), Redbeard (Aqueduct) and the latest, Coomer, on November 26th at Churchill Downs. Midshipman’s total of 17 winners from his first crop places him in a tie for third among all others in his sire peer group.

The juvenile colt Coomer, racing for just the second time in his career, broke alertly and then settled in towards the middle of the pack throughout most of the first six furlongs of the one and one-sixteenth mile event. As the field entered the stretch, it appeared that it wasn’t going to be Coomer’s day as he faded to third last but the colt then put in a fierce rally, pulling away in the stretch to win by four lengths.

Bred by Dividing Ridge Farm in Kentucky, Coomer was produced from the unraced Dynaformer mare, Dixie Satin, dam of Listed winner Big Power. Dixie Satin is also a half-sister to Listed winner Mumbo Jumbo (dam of Listed winner Trusty Temper) and Listed winner King Of Dixie.

Mishipman currently ranks among the top 10 freshman sire of 2014 in North America and he also ranks among the leaders by overall percentage of winners to foals and winners to starters. In addition to the aforementioned winners, Midshipman is represented by the impressive Stakes winner Naval Command, and his other foals have broken their maidens at major tracks in North America, including Belmont, Gulfstream Park, Keeneland, Woodbine and Santa Anita.

Midshipman will stand the 2015 breeding season at $7,500 live foal.
