Big John B rallies from far back to win the G3 Tokyo City Cup

Son of Hard Spun returns to winning form in twelve-furlong contest

Big John B made his return to the main track a winning one with a sharp two-and-a-half length victory in the G3 Tokyo City Cup at Santa Anita.

Racing at the back of the field through early stages of the twelve-furlong contest, the classy seven-year-old gelding by Hard Spun began closing on the leaders through the far turn. As the field hit the top of the stretch, Big John B was under a full head of steam and easily swept by the frontrunners as he charged to victory.

Bred in Florida by Brylynn Farm, Big John B is out of Stakes winner and multiple Graded-placed mare Baldomera, a half-sister to G3 winner Circle Unbroken.

Hard Spun enjoyed a terrific year in 2015 siring G1 winners Hard Not To Like, Hard Aces, Smooth Roller and Ertijaal. So far this year, Hard Spun has sired Le Romain, winner of the G1 Randwick Guineas; Reload, winner of the G3 Tampa Bay Stakes; Khusoosy, winner of the G3 Abu Dhabi Championship; and Ghaamer, winner of the G3 HH The President Cup.
